Queues and Schedules
For most of my life, I've been a fairly unscheduled person. This is not to say I'm undisciplined (though I am, to a point), but rather that I've sort of done things as I've thought to do them. Needless to say, this isn't good for actually getting things done. Taking a break in the middle of a coding section to go to laundry so you can go to church tomorrow is far from ideal.
So, I've been trying to add a little more structure to my life. I'm a strong believer in taking a Sabbath/rest day, and being a Christian in the Western Church, Sunday is a natural fit. Other than church itself, what I'll be doing isn't clear... but that's kind of the point. It's for resting. Perhaps this will turn into a day to clear out my Instapaper and put the Kindle to use. (Not that I have a Kindle, but that's another story.)
Saturday is maintenance day. Things that need to be done on a semi-regular basis, like weekly disk clones and taking stock of my task queues, are the focus. I've also added a weekly "alone around people time", which basically consists of hanging out in a public library, bookstore, coffee shop, or something along those lines. Sounds weird, but I find it very therapeutic.
Monday through Friday is the workweek. I'm still working on a workday routine, but daily walks and regular mealtimes are definitely priorities. Another thing I'd like to do is have a weekly strategy session to figure out which bugs/features/maintenance things I'll work on in the upcoming week. Doing this on Monday mornings never works, so I'm thinking about making this a task for Sunday evenings.
Do you have a daily/weekly routine? I'd love to hear about it. Contact information is on the sidebar.
